The Art Chest

Engaged to be married to Amy Brenneman on May 9th of 2008, I knew my bachelor ways of letting projects, tools, sketches, etc. spread over every available surface needed to comes to terms with reality.

What I needed: A way to contain and organize all of my tools and art supplies, yet disguise their utilitarian nature in a cabinet or chest (that would not likely have its own shop for several years).

The result: A chest of drawers I concieved, designed, and constructed over a period of two days during Christmas break in my dad's workshop.

I chose white ash for the carcass with floating panels of birch plywood in the sides. The lower two drawers are bookmatched spalted red oak. The next drawer up is a nice peice of quartersawn red aak. And the top three drawers are wormy chestnut

Due to time, the drawers were quickly assembled with brads and glue, with rabbets and screws on the larger tiers. The top hosts breadboard ends and the casework is all dadoes and mortise
and tenons.

Eventually a larger cabinet will be built below this chest to house plastic tubs of art supplies and paper, thus raising the drawers of sharp tools far above little fingers, whether they come to visit or to join the family.

Oneday...
